Viticulture in Ukraine

Viticulture in Ukraine has a centuries-old tradition, with production mainly for the domestic market, neighboring countries, the European Union and North America .

history

Viticulture was already in the 4th century BC. BC in the Crimea operated by ancient Greek colonists. In the 11th century, Orthodox monks introduced viticulture to more northern areas around Kiev.

Under Catherine II (1729–1796), Crimea became Russian in 1783. Mikhail Voronzow opened a large winery near Yalta in 1820 . The Magaratsch Viticulture Institute was founded in 1828. After the Crimean War, Lev Golitsyn grew the first "sparkling wine" ( Crimean sparkling wine ) on his Novij Swet estate near Yalta. The Massandra winery was founded under Tsar Nicholas II (1868–1918) . Ukraine became the main supplier of wine to the USSR during the Soviet era. In 1986 large parts of the goods were destroyed during the anti-alcohol campaign under Gorbachev . Production has been increasing again since 2000.

The most important varieties are Aligoté , Nutmeg , Isabella , Traminer , Cabernet Sauvignon , Chardonnay , Fetească , Pinot Noir , Pinot Gris , Rkatsiteli .

Sparkling wines

The production of sparkling wines like Crimean sparkling wine is growing. The main production sites are in Kiev , Bachmut , Lemberg , Odessa and Kharkiv . The production is based on Pinot Blanc , Aligoté , Riesling , Matrassa and Fetească .
