Massandra (Ukrainian Масандра ; Russian Массандра ) is an urban-type settlement in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea immediately adjacent to Yalta on the subtropical south coast of the Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea in Ukraine . The place Massandra originally emerged as a Greek settlement. Today it is divided into the four other Widradne / Відрадне, Voschod / Восход, Nikita / Нікіта and Sowjetske / Совєтське in addition to the eponymous settlement .
Hunting lodge
In 1783, Massandra was acquired by the daughter of the Polish nobleman Lew Potocki, who then began building an 80 hectare park and a castle in the first half of the 19th century . Later the governor general of New Russia bought the property and after his death it became the property of Tsar Alexander III. over. He had a three-story, imaginatively designed hunting lodge - the Massandra Palace - built in the French style of the 17th century in the upper part of the property . During the Soviet era, the castle was used as the closely guarded state dacha of the Central Committee of the CPSU and Joseph Stalin spent his summer holidays here. The castle has been open to visitors since the end of the Soviet Union .
