Bilohirsk

Bilohirsk (Ukrainian Білогірськ ; Russian Белогорск Belogorsk [about "White Mountains"], Crimean Tatar Qarasuvbazar [about "Bazaar on the Black River"], Armenian Բելոգորսկ, Կարասու-Բազար / Belogorsk, Qarasuvbazar Republic ) is a city in the Crimean Autonomous Republic . It is on average 180 meters above sea level. Until 1944 it was called Karasubasar .

history

Surrounded by hills, on a rock wall on the Biyuk Karasu River, the trading town had 11,877 inhabitants in 1880 and 18,400 in 2006. It experienced its heyday during the rule of the Genoese , which they had to leave to the Tatars in the 15th century , after which it belonged to the Ottoman Empire . In a constant dispute with Russia , the city was captured by the Russians in 1737, plundered and burned down. After the Fifth Russo-Turkish War , as a result of the Peace of Kütschük Kainardschi in 1779 , Karasu-Bazaar became the capital of Crimea for five years, after its first annexation by Russia in 1783, it had to give up this privilege to the newly founded Simferopol .

Most of the Krimchaks , a Turkic-speaking ethnic group of Jewish faith who had lived in Crimea since the early Middle Ages , were murdered by German SS and police units at the end of 1941 , and the Karasu-Bazaar synagogue from 1516 was destroyed.

The Crimean Tatar majority of the population living there was deported to Central Asia on May 18, 1944 on Stalin's orders for “ collaboration with the German occupying power” (see Reichskommissariat Ukraine ) , whereby about half of the Crimean Tatars perished on the transport in cattle wagons .

Although the importance of the city steadily declined over time, it is still a center of fruit exports today. The place is also home to one of the more important Crimean reservoirs for water supply.
