Foros (Ukrainian and Russian Форос ) is an urban-type settlement in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in Ukraine . The village is located about 6 kilometers east of Cape Sarych (southernmost point of the Crimean peninsula ) and about 38 kilometers west of the city of Yalta on the subtropical south coast of the peninsula.
The settlement council community of Foros is divided into the eponymous settlement in the east bordering urban-type Sanatorne (Санаторне) and the beach settlement of Olywa (Олива), which is even further east on the coast .
The name of the place is derived from the Greek word φορος for "(boat) tax", which indicates the Greek settlement of the place from ancient times to the 15th century. After the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Empire , the area became the property of various princes. At the end of the 19th century it finally came into the possession of the Russian entrepreneur Alexander Kuznetsov, who turned the place into a health resort based on the European model, creating parks and a palace ensemble that still exists today. In 1892 an orthodox church (Church of the Resurrection of Christ) was built above the village on the so-called Red Rock, based on historical models. The population initially consisting mainly of Crimean Tatars , who mainly dealt with viticulture, has now given way to a predominantly Russian population. In 1922 a sanatorium for cardiovascular diseases, unspecific diseases of the respiratory tract and functional disorders of the nervous system was opened in the village. This, together with the increasing tourism, favored the development of the place, so that it received the status of an urban-type settlement since 1962 and was subordinate to the city administration of Yalta.
At the dacha Tesseli (Тесселі) located in the local area, the then President of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev , was detained during the August coup in 1991 .
