(7629) Foros is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Tschernych on August 19, 1977 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj ( IAU code 095). There had already been an unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid on October 11, 1948 with the provisional designation 1948 TB 2 at the Crimean Observatory in Simejis .

The asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called the Hertha family, after (135) Hertha ). The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (7629) Foros are almost identical to those of four smaller asteroids, assuming the absolute magnitude of 16.6, 17.2, 18.2 and 17.8 versus 14.2 : (137505) 1999 VZ 21 , (148477) 2001 FS 99 , (311243) 2005 CT 68 and (339734) 2005 SR 44 .

(7629) Foros was named on May 4, 1999 after Foros , a health resort on the south coast of the Crimean peninsula . A Martian crater was named after Foros as early as 1979 : Foros Martian Crater .
