Sowjetskyj (Ukrainian Совєтський - Ukrainian officially since May 12, 2016 Ichki / Ічкі; Russian Советский / Sowetski , Crimean Tatar İçki ) is an urban-type settlement and the administrative center of the raion of the same name in the east of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea , Ukraine with 10,000 inhabitants (2012 ).
geography
Sovetskyj is located on the North Crimean Canal and on the Bijuk-Karassu ( Біюк-Карасу ), a 102 km long tributary of the Salhyr ( Салгир ), the largest river on the Crimean peninsula. At the settlement along which runs highway M 17 and there is a station on the railway line from Dzhankoi to Kerch . The distance to Simferopol , the southwestern capital of Crimea, is 106 km and the southeastern Feodosija is 66 km away.
history
The first mention of Ichki (Ukrainian Ічкі́ ), the name of the village at that time, comes from the year 1798, which at that time was inhabited by 41 people. Since 1892 the place has had a railway station and since 1941 the place has had the status of an urban-type settlement.
On November 2, 1941, Itschki was occupied by Wehrmacht troops and liberated by Red Army troops on April 14, 1944 . In connection with the deportation of the Crimean Tatar population, the settlement was renamed Sovietskyi in 1944.
