The King George IV Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve on the island of Newfoundland, part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It was established as a provisional reserve in 1984. In 1997 the protected area received its current status.
location
The 18.4 km² large reserve is located on the upper reaches of the Lloyds River in southwest Newfoundland. It includes the confluence of the Lloyds River as well as an unnamed river in the south bank of King George IV Lake . The municipality of Burgeo is 65 km south . The Route 480 is 10 km east of the reserve over.
fauna
The core of the reserve is an area of freshwater marshland that extends over the mouth of the rivers into King George IV Lake. This provides breeding grounds for various geese birds and ducks such as Canada goose , dark duck , Anas carolinensis , golden-bellied duck and ring-billed duck . In addition, the reserve forms an important habitat for the La Poile - caribou herd. In 2004 this consisted of around 3000 animals.
flora
Various peat mosses thrive in the reserve . The King George IV Ecological Reserve is partially forested. There are balsam fir and black spruce .
