The Lloyds River is an approximately 115 km long river in the west of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
River course
The Lloyds River has its source in a lake area on the island's watershed. It flows in a northeasterly direction. It flows through the lakes King George IV Lake and Lloyds Lake . In between, at river kilometer 47, Route 480 (Burgeo Highway) crosses the river. The Lloyds River eventually flows into the head end of Red Indian Lake , which is drained by the Exploits River . The King George IV Ecological Reserve is located on the southwestern shore of King George IV Lake .
Hydrology
The Lloyds River drains an area of about 850 km². The mean discharge below King George IV Lake 60 km above the mouth is 21 m³ / s. In May the river carries the largest amount of water in the year with an average of 55.4 m³ / s.
Wildlife
In the river are Atlantic salmon , brook trout , Arctic Norway , American eel and three-spined and nine-spined stickleback before. Before the construction of a fish ladder at the outlet of Red Indian Lake , the river system of the Lloyds River was inaccessible for migratory fish .
Mammals in the river include the American mink , the North American otter , the Canadian beaver and the muskrat .
There are also various water birds that breed on the river and in the adjacent wetlands in the summer months.
Freetime activities
There is an outfitter at Cormack's Pond that offers fishing and hunting activities. Hiking, canoeing and kayaking , camping, snowmobiling and ATV driving are other activities that are possible in the Lloyds River catchment area.
