The Red Indian Lake is a lake in the west of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

The 185 km² Red Indian Lake extends in SW-NE direction over a length of 64.4 km. The maximum width is 5.8 km. The Exploits River drains the lake to the Bay of Exploits on the north coast of the island. The municipality of Buchans is located 5 km north of the lake . Millertown is on the east bank . In the lake there is a small island called Buchans Island .

The Exploits Dam (also known as Millertown Dam ) regulates the outflow of the lake. This serves as a water reservoir for the downstream hydropower plant at Grand Falls-Windsor . The dam is operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro , a subsidiary of Nalcor Energy . The average water level is 153.7  m . It fluctuates between 149.8  m and 156.4  m . The mean runoff from the lake between 2007 and 2016 was 156 m³ / s.

Major tributaries of the lake are Lloyds River , Mary March's Brook, Victoria River , Buchan's Brook, Tulks Brook, and Shanadithit Brook. In addition, the Star Lake hydropower plant is located at the western end of the lake , which uses the gradient from Star Lake to the north . The Victoria River flows from Victoria Lake to the southwest to Red Indian Lake. Victoria Lake is also flow regulated. Its water is now mainly diverted east to the Bay d'Espoir hydropower station for energy generation .
