The painting Margrave Georg the Pious of Brandenburg-Ansbach is a work by Lucas Cranach the Younger , which shows the Margrave Georg the Pious bareheaded. It is a panel painting on linden wood from 1571, which is in the painting collection of the Grunewald hunting lodge in Berlin.

On the 101.4 cm × 72.2 cm painting, Georg the Pious is shown as a half-length figure against a light background, on which his head casts a shadow , creating a spatial dimension. The margrave's black robe is wrapped in a fur-lined coat, which is also black, which fills more than two thirds of the picture area. A double triple gold chain runs over the upper body. In his right hand he is holding a black hat with gold decorations. The left hand is ringed. The picture shows the margrave with a voluminous full beard in the habitus of a Protestant prince in simple black clothing.

Is dated the picture of a snake signet with the year 1571 on the right shoulder of the Marquis. The posthumously made portrait of the margrave, who died in 1543, is apparently based on a study of the face made during his lifetime, which was kept in the Cranach workshop and used by Lucas Cranach the Younger.

History of origin

The commissioner of the picture is presumably the son of George the Pious, Margrave Georg Friedrich von Brandenburg-Ansbach . It could have been intended for an ancestral gallery on the Plassenburg . The painting had been in the Ansbach residence since 1786 and came to Berlin in 1811. Today the picture is owned by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg .
