Fidelis Buck

Fidelis Buck SJ (born November 22, 1916 in Hitzkofen ; † May 25, 1979 ibid) was a German-Canadian Jesuit and professor of the Old Testament .

Life

After graduating from high school in Sigmaringen , Fidelis Buck entered the Jesuit order as a novice in St. Blasien in 1935 . He completed his philosophy studies at the Berchmanskolleg in Pullach near Munich. Theology studies in Montreal followed . On August 15, 1945, Buck was ordained a priest in Montreal ; He celebrated the after primacy in September 1945 in his home parish. Buck was now a Canadian citizen.

From 1948 to 1953 he studied in Rome at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and was awarded a dissertation on the love of God to the Prophet Oseas doctorate . He conducted further studies on Middle Eastern religions and biblical archeology . He visited India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Cyprus and Greece. He taught Hebrew language and Old Testament exegesis in India. At Montezuma Seminary in New Mexico (USA), Buck created weekly radio programs on the Bible, exegesis and biblical history in English and Spanish.

Since 1963 Buck taught at Regis College Willowdale in Toronto ( Canada ). A few years later he became a professor at the Toronto School of Theology at the University of Toronto. In Canada, he did Sunday religious television shows with discussion forums. On the occasion of his silver jubilee as a priest, the community of Hitzkofen granted him honorary citizenship . This is followed by a visiting professorship for philosophy and religious studies in Nairobi (Kenya).

On May 25, 1979, Fidelis Buck died during a stay at home in Hitzkofen.
