Karl Johann Wilhelm von Barton, called von Stedman (* July 12, 1804 in The Hague , † June 13, 1882 in Besselich near Vallendar ) was a German landowner and liberal politician.

Life

Stedman was the son of the Dutch Lieutenant General Jan Andries (Jean André) Barton from the old Scottish aristocratic family Barton and his wife Nicole Gertrude van der Poll. Stedman, who was a Protestant denomination, married the Catholic Maria Agnes Roth (born October 18, 1808 in Monheim; † December 22, 1883 in Besselich), the daughter of the farmer Franz Firmenich , on June 5, 1832 in Monheim near Opladen . The Prussian recognition of the nobility by means of a heraldry record dates from February 24, 1858. The Prussian name and coat of arms association as "von Barton, called von Stedman" dates from September 22, 1862.

Stedman attended the military academy in Turin from 1813 to 1814 and the grammar school in Düsseldorf in 1816 . He then studied law in Liège , Leuven and Bonn from 1821 to 1826 . In 1825 he was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD. In 1827 he was a lawyer in Brussels and from 1827 to 1828 unskilled worker in the Dutch Foreign Ministry in The Hague. From 1832 to 1834 he studied camera science in Bonn. In 1834 he acquired the Besselich estate and lived as a master on Besselich.

Stedmnn was a district deputy in Koblenz . From 1835 to 1848 he belonged to the Rhenish Provincial Parliament for the 4th state in the constituency of Koblenz administrative district. In 1847 he was a member of the United State Parliament for the Rhine Province . He took liberal positions. In the March Revolution he was a leading exponent of Rhenish liberalism. He took part in the Heidelberg Assembly and the Frankfurt Pre-Parliament and was a member of the Committee of Seven . From May 18, 1848 to May 20, 1849 he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly and then in the Gotha post-parliament . From September 20, 1848 to April 10, 1849 he was Reich Commissioner for Schleswig-Holstein and Lauenburg during the Schleswig-Holstein uprising . In 1850 he belonged to the Volkshaus of the Erfurt Union Parliament . He was also the author of scientific and political writings.
