Heidelberg Assembly
The Heidelberg assembly was a meeting of 51 liberal and democratic politicians on March 5, 1848 in the Badischer Hof inn in Heidelberg at the invitation of Johann Adam von Itzstein . The assembly provided the essential impetus for the pre-parliament and was thus a milestone on the way to the Frankfurt National Assembly .
Participants in the meeting were mainly South German parliamentarians, but in contrast to the Heppenheim conference, people from different political directions within the national parliamentary movement.
The assembly published a statement in the Deutsche Zeitung which contributed significantly to the fact that a constituent national assembly, elected by all men, came about within ten weeks.
The most important result of this meeting was the establishment of a committee of seven , suggested by Welcker , which issued the invitations for the pre-parliament in Frankfurt am Main . A foreign policy statement directed against Russia and pro France was also issued. The assembly was divided over the path to a parliamentary nation-state, as Struve in particular insisted on a social democracy run by a board of directors, modeled on the United States , while the majority of the assembly, especially Gagern, rejected the step into revolution and supported a pronounced constitutional monarchy .
