Hammeria is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the American specialist for ice flowers, Steven A. Hammer (* 1951).

description

The plants of the genus Hammeria grow compact to creeping or upright and as young plants reach heights of growth of up to 20 centimeters. The triangular leaves are usually a bit rough due to the raised tannin-containing idioblasts that are located under the hypodermis . They are somewhat toothed along their longitudinal rib.

The mostly single flowers sit on a longitudinally grooved flower stalk . Their petals are pink to purple in color. The pink thread-like staminodes are paler to completely white at the base and surround the inwardly curved stamens that form a cone. The nectaries form a ring. The capsule fruits are similar to those of the genus Titanopsis .

The distribution area of the genus Hammeria extends in South Africa in the Tanqua Karoo and parts of the Little Karoo from the city of Calvinia in the Northern Cape Province to Ceres in the Western Cape Province . The amount of precipitation in March and November is less than 100 millimeters.
