Heinz Boberach (born November 21, 1929 in Cologne ; † August 21, 2008 ) was a German archivist at the Federal Archives in Koblenz and a historian . He was best known as the editor of the 17-volume source editionMessages from the Reich ”.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1950, Boberach studied history and Latin at the University of Cologne . He was trained at the Federal Archives in Koblenz and at the Marburg Archive School from 1957 to 1959, and in 1959 he received his doctorate from the University of Cologne. In 1974 he was the representative of the President of the Federal Archives. Boberach played a key role in the expansion of the Federal Archives by taking over numerous files from the Reich and Prussian authorities as well as various bequests. These documents supported the charges in the Auschwitz trials as well as in other proceedings against Nazi criminals. In addition to the form of printed finding aids (instead of online finding aids ), which was still common at the time, Boberach primarily published files from the National Socialist era that were central to research . Most recently, he was chief archive director of the Federal Archives in Koblenz.
