Gao Hongbo (Chinese: 高洪波; pinyin: Gāo Hóngbō; born January 25, 1966 in Beijing ) is a former Chinese soccer striker and head coach of the China League One team Beijing Sport University FC . Previously, he coached the Chinese national soccer team from 2009 to 2011 and again in 2016.

Player career

society

Gao was born in Beijing and was discovered and trained by Xu Genbao at the Beijing Sports School. As a talented offspring, he joined the Beijing youth football team in 1981, where he was promoted to the Beijing selection (now Beijing Guoan ) in 1985 after a few years . There he managed to establish himself in the first team and to move up to the first division with the club. Once in the front row, his career blossomed and he was able to win the Golden Ball for top scorer and the Golden Shoe for top player in the league, despite failing to get a major trophy. In 1994 he left the team to play for Tiong Bahru CSC in Singapore . He justified this with the difficulty of passing the standard physical test of the Chinese Football Association.

After a year in Singapore, in which he became the top scorer in the FAS Premier League , he returned to the newly formed, fully professionalized Beijing Guoan in 1994. He became an immediate addition to the team when he scored 21 goals over the next two years. After winning the Chinese Cup in 1996, he left Beijing Guoan and moved to Guangzhou Songri in the second division, where he let his career end.

National team

On April 4, 1992, Gao made his debut in a friendly against the United States for the Chinese senior team. He represented the Chinese selection team at the 1992 Asian Cup . In 1997 he played his last game for the national team in a World Cup qualifier against Vietnam.

Coaching career

Gao began his coaching career with Guangzhou Songri in 1999, having previously worked as an assistant for two years. However, he had to leave the club after only eleven games despite a decent start to the season. He then went abroad and completed trainer courses in England and Germany .

After several months of study, Gao Hongbo was appointed coach of the U-17 national team. After a 7-1 loss to Japan at the U-17 Asian Cup in 2000 , he was dismissed.

In 2001 he was assistant coach of Shanghai Zhongyuan for one year and from 2002 he was assistant coach of the Chinese national team for two years. His next position in 2004 at second division Xiamen Hongshi was a success and he was able to lead the team to promotion to the Chinese Super League in 2005 .

He led Changchun Yatai to the league title in 2007 , which was the greatest success of his coaching career to date. Gao was fired from Changchun in 2008 after the club struggled to repeat the previous season's successes.

On April 16, 2009, Gao signed a contract as the head coach of the Chinese national soccer team. His successes there include winning the 2010 East Asian Cup and a 1-1 draw in a friendly against Germany and a 1-0 win against France . He was sacked a few months after China failed in the preliminary round of the 2011 Asian Cup .

This was followed by positions at Shaanxi Renhe (now Guizhou Renhe ), Shanghai SIPG and Jiangsu Sainty . In 2015, Gao became Henk Fraser's assistant for one year at the Dutch first division club ADO Den Haag . The Hague had recently been bought by the Chinese marketing company United Vansen .

After Alain Perrin's dismissal , he was appointed coach of the Chinese national team on February 3, 2016. He resigned on October 11, 2016 after losing to Syria and Uzbekistan in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup .
