history

In order to strengthen the economy and tourism in the Smolensk Oblast, the planning of a permanent race track began in 2007. The architect of the race track is the Aachen architect Hermann Tilke . The construction of the Smolensk Ring began in 2009 and the race track was opened in August 2010.

A run of the FIA GT3 European Championship was supposed to take place in 2011 , but this was then postponed to 2012 because the necessary reconstruction work on the track was not completed in time to receive the FIA track license required for the racing series. In 2012, however, the FIA GT3 European Championship drove in Moscow.

In 2011 the Superleague Formula should also host a race, this race also did not take place due to the unfinished conversion work.

From 2010 to 2012 races of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship were held on the track. Today, national automobile championship races take place on the track, including races of the Russian Touring Car Championship.
