The Devil's Passkey is a comedy film by Erich von Stroheim from 1920.

action

The talented but unsuccessful American playwright Warren Goodwright and his attractive wife Grace plunge into the elegant and superficial life of Parisian society. Madame Mallot, the owner of an exclusive fashion store, tries to couple Grace with the good-looking American officer Rex Strong in order to subsequently blackmail her. But when Rex learns that Grace is married, he changes his mind and plays the chivalrous friend who wants to save Grace from a scandal. However, Grace never intended to cheat either. For the gossip-addicted society it still looks as if an affair is going on between Grace and Rex.

Grace's husband hears about the matter - albeit without knowing that his wife is involved. He writes a piece about it and has great success with it. The performances are regularly sold out. Except for Warren, all of Paris knows that the play is about his wife's "affair". You have a lot of fun with the matter.

When Warren finally learns the truth, he confronts his wife. Everything clears up and the couple - having become rich through the success of the play - lives happily on.

background

Erich von Stroheim, who had been very successful with Blind Husbands , staged an elegant social comedy this time. It was his second feature film as a director.

The film has been considered lost since it was discovered in the Universal Archives in 1941 that the only surviving nitrate film copy had disintegrated.
