Jérôme Cahuzac (born June 19, 1952 in Talence , Gironde department ) is a French politician . From May 16, 2012 to March 19, 2013, he was Assistant Minister for the Budget in the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Foreign Trade in the Ayrault I and Ayrault II cabinets . He belonged to the Parti Socialiste (PS) before they expelled him in April 2013.

Life

After attending school, Cahuzac studied medicine and after completing his studies as a doctor of medicine worked as a surgeon , where he was an assistant doctor at the Medical Clinic of the Hôpitaux de Paris between 1984 and 1988 . From 1988 to 1991 he was technical advisor to Claude Évin , who at the time was Minister of Social Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Michel Rocard .

After working again as a surgeon, he began his political career by representing constituency No. 3 of the Lot-et-Garonne department in the National Assembly from 1997 to 2002 and then again from 2007 and 2012 as a candidate for the PS . He was also a member of the General Council of this department from 1998 to 2001 and mayor of Villeneuve-sur-Lot from 2001 to 2012 .

After the election of François Hollande as President and the appointment of Jean-Marc Ayrault as Prime Minister, Cahuzac was appointed Assistant Minister for the Budget in his cabinet on May 17, 2012 , and as such was Minister for Economy, Finance and Foreign Trade Pierre Moscovici reports .

After the public prosecutor's office had initiated an investigation into suspected tax evasion, he resigned on March 19, 2013, but denied the allegation. He is accused of having undeclared bank accounts with the major Swiss bank UBS and with the Geneva-based financial company Reyl & Cie, and from 2010 in Singapore. He was succeeded by Bernard Cazeneuve . On April 2, 2013, he admitted the existence of the account and said he was caught in a spiral of lies. On December 8, 2016, Cahuzac was sentenced in the first instance to three years in prison for tax fraud, money laundering and false property declarations. He went into revision; the court ( cour d'appel de Paris ) ruled on May 15, 2018.

Edwy Plenel (* 1952), a well-known French journalist (among others, editor-in-chief of the daily Le Monde from 1996 to 2004 ) played a key role in uncovering Cahuzac's foreign accounts.
