history
The city, whose founding lies in the dark, was probably occupied by the Romans. In the 10th century it was fortified by the lords of Crépy; the remains of the fortifications are preserved in rue des taillandiers and rue Sainte-Agathe.
Saint-Arnoul Abbey was founded in 1008 under the Counts of Valois. Philip of Alsace and his wife Elisabeth founded a monastery in 1182, which they dedicated to the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket . As a result, the city attracted many pilgrims. Even after Valois was annexed to France in 1213, the city continued to flourish as a result of the pilgrimage.
The city was devastated in the Hundred Years War . 1638 raised Gaston von Orleans again to an important administrative seat. She lost this function again in 1703. The city was bombed several times during the world wars.
