Wilhelm Uhde (art dealer)
Wilhelm Uhde (born October 28, 1874 in Friedeberg , Neumark , † August 17, 1947 in Paris ) was a German art dealer, art expert, author and gallery owner.
Life
Uhde studied in Dresden law and then art history in Munich and Florence . In 1904 he settled in Paris , where he began buying works by the then unknown artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque . He opened a gallery on Montparnasse . Picasso, whose "Banquet for Rousseau" in the Bateau-Lavoir , the artist's studio, Uhde had visited in November 1908, made a portrait of the gallery owner in 1910.
From 1908 Uhde organized exhibitions of the impressionists and cubists . When his collection was confiscated by the French state at the outbreak of World War I in 1914 , Uhde left the country and only returned ten years later, only to stay in southern France during the period of National Socialism and the Second World War . The German state had expatriated him , he was stateless.
In 1908 he married Sonia Terk . The marriage was short-lived. After the divorce, Sonia Terk married Robert Delaunay . In 1917 Uhde met the painter Helmut Kolle , who was 25 years his junior and who became his life partner. Around 1930 Kolle created a portrait of Uhde.
Uhde wrote several books on the art movements he was interested in. He is also considered to be the discoverer of André Lanskoy , Henri Rousseau and Séraphine Louis, as well as other representatives of naive painting (for example, Louis Vivin ).
Wilhelm Uhde died in Paris in 1947 at the age of 72. The tomb is on the Cimetière Montparnasse in Paris, where his sister Anne-Marie Uhde and Helen Hessel are buried in the same grave.
