André Lanskoy
André Lanskoy (born March 31, 1902 in Moscow , Russian Empire as Andrei Michailowitsch Lanskoi ( Russian Андрей Михайлович Ланской ); † August 22, 1976 in Paris , France ) was a French painter of Russian descent. He is one of the most important representatives of French abstract painting , impressionism and Informel of the new « École de Paris ».
life and work
Andrei Michailowitsch Lanskoi was the son of Count Lanskoi. The family fled to Kiev during the Russian Revolution . Andrei Lanskoi began to paint in Kiev and took lessons from Sergei Sudeikin (* 1882 St. Petersburg , † 1946 New York City ).
Lanskoi briefly moved from Kiev to Crimea , which he left for Paris in 1921 . He will live and work in Paris until his death. André Lanskoy studied painting at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . During this time he painted figurative pictures, portraits and still lifes , inspired by the works of Vincent van Gogh , Henri Matisse and Chaim Soutine . In 1923 he was in Germany and in the same year he had his first group exhibition in the Licorne Gallery in Paris. In the “Salon d'Automne” in 1924 he was discovered thanks to his painting “La Noce” by the collector and Marchand amateur Wilhelm Uhde , who sponsored him and in 1925 helped him to his first solo exhibition and for a time acquired almost all of his paintings. The exhibition at Galerie Bing gave him access to private collections and museums, which resulted in a friendship with the collector Roger Dutilleul , which would last until the 1940s. Lanskoy also exhibited in Paris with Robert and Sonia Delaunay , Léopold Survage and Ossip Zadkine and other artists of Russian descent.
In 1939 Lanskoy began painting abstractly. He expanded his repertoire and made book illustrations , tapestries , mosaics and collages . Lanskoy had an intense friendship with Nicolas de Staël , with whom he exhibited together from 1948. In the 1950s, Lanskoy's art received international attention and recognition. He exhibited at Fine Arts Associates in New York in 1956 . He was one of the most important representatives of lyrical abstraction , impressionism and informel . In 1959 Lanskoy was a participant in documenta II and was also represented with works at documenta III in Kassel in 1964 . In 1960 he was represented in the large exhibition "Les Peintres Russes de l'école de Paris" in the museum of Saint-Denis .
