geography
location
The place is located 440 kilometers north of Melbourne and 131 kilometers east of Wodonga . The place is on the edge of the Snowy Mountains and is part of the Shire of Towong .
history
Before the colonization, the Aboriginal tribe of the Wolgal or the Walgalu lived south of Tintaldra. European settlement began in 1837 when the settler Charles Huon came to this area in search of grassland with water. From 1854 gold prospectors settled in the place. Their search for gold was unsuccessful. On January 1, 1867, a post office was opened. A shallow ford over the Murray River led to a slow growth of the place. In 1892 a bridge was built over the Murray River. After the First World War , the Repatriation Department made settlement land available to soldiers. Until 1927 there was a bakery by the grocery store, which was created in 1864.
On January 13, 1939, a large part of Tintaldra's buildings was destroyed by a bush fire .
today
Tintaldra lives from agriculture and tourism. The grocery store from 1864, which was built from local timber, still exists to this day. The nearby Burrowa Pine Mountain National Park offers opportunities for hiking and camping.
