Georg Stibi (born July 25, 1901 in Markt Rettenbach ; † May 30, 1982 in Berlin ) was a German politician and publicist.

Life

As the son of a shoemaker, he worked as an agricultural and industrial worker after attending elementary school and eventually became a journalist. In 1919 he joined the USPD and in 1922 the KPD . In the following years he worked as editor-in-chief of the Freedom in Düsseldorf , from 1932 he worked as a correspondent for the KPD central organ, Die Rote Fahne, in the Soviet Union . From 1937 to 1939 he took part in the Spanish Civil War, where he moderated German-language radio programs. After the defeat of the Republican armed forces, Stibi went to France in 1939 and was interned in Le Vernet . In 1941 he emigrated to Mexico . There he joined the Free Germany Movement (BFD) and the Heinrich Heine Club . From 1943 to 1946 he headed La Estampa Méxicana , the publishing house of the Mexican artists' association Taller de Grafica Popular .

In May 1946, Stibi returned to the eastern part of Berlin . Here he joined the SED . In 1949 he took over the post of editor-in-chief of the Berliner Zeitung . From 1949 to 1950 he was head of the Government Information Office . In 1953 Stibi became editor-in-chief of the Leipziger Volkszeitung . From 1954 he worked in the editorial department of Neues Deutschland , of which he was editor-in-chief from 1955 to 1956. From 1957 to 1958 Stibi was ambassador to Romania and from 1958 to 1961 to Czechoslovakia . From 1961 to 1974 Stibi was deputy foreign minister of the GDR .

Stibi was with the KPD functionary Henny Stibi, geb. Piepenstock (1902–1982) married, who accompanied him into exile in Mexico in 1941. Both were in the grave conditioning Pergolenweg the memorial of the socialists at the Berlin Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde buried.
