Ewald Moldt

Ewald Moldt (born April 22, 1927 in Greifswald ; † October 17, 2019 ) was a German diplomat and politician of the GDR . From 1978 to 1988 he was Head of the Permanent Mission of the GDR in the Federal Republic of Germany and from 1970 to 1978 and from 1988 to 1990 Deputy Foreign Minister of the GDR.

Life

During the Second World War Moldt worked in the main customs office in Stralsund , but was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1944. In the spring of 1945 he was wounded. After the end of the war he was involved in the founding of Antifa youth committees and later joined the FDJ .

After joining the SPD in 1945, and thus after the compulsory merger of the SPD and KPD into the SED in 1946 , he became interested in youth work in the Greifswald Railway Directorate . From 1947 to 1950 he was the youth welfare officer of the district administration. He then began studying at the German Academy for Political Science and Law (DASR) in Forst Zinna and then worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MfAA), where he worked from 1953 to 1958 as a personal advisor to Foreign Minister Lothar Bolz .

He continued his work as a diplomatic employee in the GDR embassies in Romania and Poland until 1963. In the same year he rose to head the press department at the MfAA. In 1965 he became the GDR ambassador to Romania.

From 1970 to 1978 he was Deputy Foreign Minister. During this time he was chairman of the UNESCO commission of the GDR for two years . For ten years, from 1978 to 1988, he was head of the permanent representation of the GDR in the Federal Republic , in the same year he was again deputy foreign minister of the GDR. After the reunification and peaceful revolution in the GDR , he was given early retirement in March 1990.

From 1986 to 1989 he was a member of the Central Committee of the SED .
