Lakes Entrance is a resort and fishing port in eastern Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria . It is located about 320 km east of Melbourne on an artificial canal that connects the Gippsland Lakes with the Bass Strait . The 2016 census counted 6,071 inhabitants.

The settlement was originally called Cunningham ; the first post office of that name opened on February 5, 1870.

Lakes Entrance, which is almost at sea level, can be reached from Melbourne via Bairnsdale and the town of Kalimna in the northwest on the Princes Highway , which winds around Jemmy's Point , a headland in the Gippsland Lakes. From this headland you can enjoy spectacular views of The Entrance Canal and the lakes. The Princes Highway leaves the city in a northeastern direction and leads via Nowa Nowa to Orbost .

Lakes Entrance is primarily a fishing port and tourist destination, the beach in front of the town is a safe haven for professional fishing and recreational water sports. The surf beach is monitored from November to March by the Lakes Entrance Surf Live Saving Club (SLSC), and lifeguards patrol from late December to late January. There are many restaurants, shops and campsites on the lake side. Most of the residential areas are further inland.

The place is very popular with campers who settle in the camping parks or in the Colquhoun State Forrest .

The nearest major cities are Bairnsdale (35 km west) and Orbost (66 km east).

Sports

The city has a football team that plays in the East Gippsland Football League .

There is also a hockey club that plays in the East Gippsland Hockey Association , but still bears the name of its former seat, Swan Reach .

Golfers play on the Lakes Entrance Golf Club course on Golf Links Road.

Lakes Entrance also provides access to some of the best fishing in Victoria.
