Prehistoric was the area of the territory Bidawal , a tribe of Aborigines . The first modern settlements date from around 1830; In 1854 a small wooden lighthouse was built near Gabo Island . The stone lighthouse, which still exists today, was completed in 1862. With the beginning of commercial fishing around 1880, tourism also found its way into the place.
During the 2019/20 bushfires on December 30, 2019, around 4,000 people, some of whom had fled here, were trapped on the beach by bushfires advancing towards the coast. A dock landing ship of the Royal Australian Navy , the HMAS Choules , sailed to this stretch of beach on January 3, 2020 and evacuated around 900 people. A patrol boat called 'MV Sycamore' evacuated 57 other people.
