The city of Hamilton was founded on the border with three traditional Aboriginal tribal areas : the Gunditjmara area , which extends south to the coast, the Tjapwurong area to the northeast, and the Bunganditj area to the west. Because of its fertile soil and sufficient water, the majority of the indigenous people were sedentary. The remains of dams and fish traps can still be seen today, for example in Lake Condah south of Hamilton.
On September 12, 1836, the explorer Thomas Mitchell was the first European to come to this area. His reports of fertility and abundance, he named western Victoria Australia Felix , led ranchers to move their flocks of sheep to the area. Just three years later, in 1839, the part of what is now Hamilton was settled. Its owners, the Wegde family, called the piece of land The Grange .
The Grange's proximity to other properties and the major transport links between Portland and New South Wales soon led to the establishment of a hotel, a blacksmith and smaller shops. A post office was opened on July 1, 1844. Hamilton was declared a city in 1851.
