Moe is a town in the Latrobe Valley in the Gippsland region in the Australian state of Victoria . It is located about 135 km east of Melbourne . According to the 2016 census, Moe had 8,778 residents. The city belongs to the Local Government Area Latrobe City . Originally the town was called The Mowie , later Little Moi . Presumably the city name is derived from a word in the Aboriginal language Kurnai , which meant "swampland".

Moe is an orientation and stopping point for tourists on the way to Erica , the historic gold rush town of Walhalla , the Walhalla Goldfields Railway and Mount Baw Baw . Moe hosts the Moe Cup horse races every year , and March , a restored historic Gippsland settlement near Lake Narracan , hosts the Moe Jazz Festival . The Australian Football finals of the Gippsland Football League and the Mid Gippsland Football League also take place there regularly . The Gippsland Power team represents the region in the TAC Cup (U-18 league of Australian football).

In 1852 a small amount of gold was found in Moe. A small settlement on Narracan Creek was a stop on the journey to the Walhalla gold fields further north. A post office was opened on March 17, 1862.

The settlement was mentioned in a document in 1879 after the establishment of the Shire of Narracoan . A year later the rail connection came from Morwell . In 1963 Moe was promoted to town.

The local economy consists of lignite mining in the Latrobe Valley and converting it into electricity. The area is also known for its dairy industry.

The Moe High School was opened 1952nd The school was later merged with Lowanna Secondary College and residential buildings were built on the school grounds. Jason Bek , a former student of Moe High School, is the current principal of Lowanna Secondary College.

According to the 2016 census, there were 8,778 residents in Moe, of whom 48.6% were male and 51.4% were female. 2.1% of the population were Aboriginal and 75.3% were born in Australia. 3.2% were immigrants from England , 1.4% came from the Netherlands , 1.0% from New Zealand and 0.8% each from Malta and Scotland .

Lake Narracan

The leisure center has an indoor and outdoor pool with 25 m and 50 m swimming pools and a sauna area, as well as facilities for athletics , badminton and various ball sports.

The Ted Summerton Reserve in the Vale Street for Australian football and cricket used. Moe has an Australian football team, the Moe Lions , who play in the Gippsland Football League .

Also on Vale Street is Olympic Park , where football is played. The Moe United Soccer Club plays in the Gippsland Soccer League .

Lake Narracan , the reservoir for cooling the lignite power station, is located directly to the north of the city. It is increasingly used for water sports, e.g. B. water skiing, jet skiing and fishing, used. There is also a small campsite and a water ski club.

The Moe Golf Club is located on the Thompson Road in Newborough. The Yallourn Golf Club is also not far away.

Moe is about an hour and a half east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway . With the V / Line there is a direct train connection to Melbourne, which is served several times a day.

Local bus services operated by Valley Transit connect Moe with neighboring towns of Morwell, Traralgon, Churchill and Yallourn North.

The Latrobe Regional Airport in Traralgon can be reached in about 20 minutes by car from Moe.
