Opencast lignite mining with bucket wheel excavators near the power station

The Loy Yang power plant is a lignite - fired coal - fired power plant in the Australian state of Victoria . It is located near the city of Traralgon , serves to cover the base load and produces about 1/3 of the electrical energy required in the state of Victoria.

The power plant consists of two units, Loy Yang A and Loy Yang B with a total output of 3,150  MW . Loy Yang A, owned by the Australian Gas Light Company and TEPCO , consists of four power plant blocks with an installed capacity of 525 MW each. Loy Yang B, owned by International Power , has two power plant blocks of 525 MW each.

The lignite for the operation is obtained from a nearby opencast mine , in which four bucket-wheel excavators extract lignite around the clock. 30 million tons of coal are mined each year to operate the power plant. In 2010, the opencast mine was 200 m deep and had an area of approx. 2 by 3 km. The coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley region are estimated to be around 1,300 years old at the current production rate. The annual output of the entire power plant complex is estimated at 21.2 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), making the Loy Yang power plant one of the largest CO 2 emitters in Australia.
