Drewsen Spezialpapiere is a manufacturer of uncoated wood-free specialty papers based in Lachendorf in the district of Celle . The company produces security papers, technical special papers as well as printing and packaging papers. It employs 429 people in production and administration at the Lachendorf location.
Company history
The history of Drewsen Spezialpapiere goes back to the year 1538, when a paper mill was founded on the banks of the Lachte by the Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg , Ernst the Confessor, in order to meet the increasing demand for paper that came with the invention of printing , the Reformation and the associated spread of the Bible. This makes Drewsen Spezialpapiere the oldest paper mill still producing independently in Germany. In 1714, Marcus Drewsen became the first member of the Drewsen family to lease the paper mill . In 1846 industrialization took hold with the installation of the first paper machine . A modern type of paper machine was put into operation in 1925 and a second paper machine was added in 1957.
In 1962 the first natural gas-fired steam boiler went into operation in the German paper industry at Drewsen Spezialpapiere . In order to meet the increasing demands on wastewater purity and to meet the responsibility towards the environment, a new type of biological sewage treatment plant was built in 1994 . The mill's capacity was doubled in 2000 when paper machine 5 was installed.
Technical Equipment
The mill has a production capacity of 160,000 tons per year on three paper machines. Our own combined cycle power plant covers 100% of the plant's own energy requirements.

The PM 1 is one of the fastest Fourdrinier machines in Europe, on which watermark papers from 60 g / m² basis weight are produced.
Products
The product portfolio consists of the three organizational units security papers, technical papers, and printing and packaging papers. The company is particularly focused on the specialty paper market and offers paper solutions specially tailored to customers.
Security papers
In the Prosecura area, security papers are sold that are suitable for use in products such as passports, bank checks, postage stamps, tax stamps, certificates and other documents. Depending on the requirements and area of application, various security features such as watermarks , security fibers or security threads and chemical protection features can be combined. All security papers are also suitable for inkjet printing.
Technical papers
The technical base papers are used in various products. They can be used for different processing and coating purposes and are customized for each customer. The Produra brand papers are intended for further finishing and processing steps, such as B. painting and coating, thermal painting , siliconization, extrusion or metallization. Prolabel papers form the basis for adhesive labels and labels. Sterilization papers for use in medical packaging have also been available since 2016.
Printing and packaging papers
The Profino product group produces papers for the envelope, printing and packaging sectors. Until 2012, the focus was on the production of paper for envelopes, invoice and transfer slips as well as maps and sea maps. Papers for the production of lottery tickets, travel tickets and medical prescriptions are also produced. A major change began in 2012 to counter the steady decline in graphic sales volumes in the paper industry. The portfolio was supplemented by thin printing papers for use as package inserts in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2015 Drewsen Spezialpapiere entered the packaging market and offers greaseproof food packaging, since 2016 also in a variant without fluoropolymers .

The company is certified according to various environmental standards, including ISO 14001 , FSC , PEFC and the EU Ecolabel . The environmental management system supports the continuous improvement of operational environmental protection.
The paper mill is one of the few worldwide that also offers CO 2 -neutral papers. Drewsen Spezialpapiere has a certified quality management system according to ISO 9001 . An energy management system is available for the operation of the company's own combined cycle power plant , certified according to ISO 50001 .
