Japan Air Commuter ( Japanese 日本 エ ア コ ミ ュ ー タ ー 株式会社 Nihon Ea Komyūtā Kabushiki-gaisha , JAC for short ) is a Japanese regional airline based in Kagoshima and based at Kagoshima Airport .
history
Japan Air Commuter was established on July 1, 1983 and began operations in December 1983. A joint investment plan between 14 municipalities and private investors in Kagoshima Prefecture resulted in the establishment of Japan Air Commuter. It was initially a subsidiary of Toa Domestic Airlines , later called Japan Air System . Japan Air System eventually merged with Japan Airlines.
On September 30, 2006, Japan Air Commuter retired their last NAMC YS-11 . Since no other Japanese airline operated the YS-11, an era came to an end after 41 years of service and the YS-11, developed and built in Japan, disappeared from Japanese passenger air traffic.
Japan Air Commuter ordered eight ATR 42-600s plus an option and purchase rights for 14 additional aircraft at the Paris Air Show on June 15, 2015 . For ATR , this was the first order from a Japanese airline. The new aircraft have initially replaced the Saab 340B since 2017 and will later also replace the De Havilland DHC-8-400. In June 2018, Japan Air Commuter converted an order to the stretched model ATR 72-600 .
Japan Air Commuter is 60% owned by Japan Airlines and 40% owned by Kagoshima Prefecture and 14 Amami Islands communities .
From October 25, 2020, JAC plans to fly under the IATA code of its mother, Japan Airlines (JL). The own code JC should be submitted.
