The whole area is 101.35 km².

history

Today's village is part of a Jittō community that used to consist of all 10 islands.

After the Meiji Restoration , these islands were the district Kawanabe the province of Satsuma allocated in 1897 then the district Ōshima the Ōsumi Province .

Jittō was established as a community in 1908. In 1946 the southern seven of the 10 islands came under the administration of the USA, the remaining three islands (Iōjima, Kuroshima and Takeshima) formed a separate municipality Mishima ("3 islands"). In 1952 the seven islands came under Japanese sovereignty again, with the Mishima community remaining independent and the new community retaining the spelling to distinguish it from the earlier Jitto, but choosing a different pronunciation with Toshima. In 1973 both parishes were incorporated into the Kagoshima County.
