Taira-jima ( Japanese 平 島 , dt "flat island") is one of the Tokara Islands , a subgroup of the Satsunan Islands . The island had a total of 82 inhabitants in 2005 and has an area of ​​2.08 km². The island has no airport and can only be reached by boat. Taira-jima is 32 kilometers southwest of Nakanoshima and is the second smallest inhabited island in the archipelago. Administratively, it belongs to the municipality of Toshima , where it forms the district of Tairajima.

There is a rainy season from May to September .
