China ( Japanese. 知名 町 , - chō , [ tɕina ]) is a city in Ōshima county in Kagoshima prefecture in Japan .

geography

Yakomo Beach ( 屋子 母 海岸 , Yakomo-kaigan )

China is located on the island of Okinoerabujima, north-northeast of Okinawa . This is the second most southern of the Amami Islands belonging to the Ryūkyū Islands . China is one of two cities on this island (the other is Wadomari ). Yakomo Beach, about one kilometer long, is about five minutes by bus from the port. Other natural attractions by the sea include Ushishi Beach ( ウ シ シ 海岸 , Ushishi-kaigan ) and Cape Tamina ( 田 皆 岬 , Tamina-misaki ).

The Shōryū caves ( 昇 竜 洞 , Shōryū-dō ) also belong to China . They were discovered in 1963 and some of them opened to the public in the same year. Mount Daisen ( 大 山 ) is also within the urban area .

history

In 1888 the municipal administration of China ( 知名 村 役 場 , China-mura yakuba ) was established on the island and was still responsible for the entire island. 1908 takes place due to the island community ordinance ( 島嶼 町 村 制 , tōshō-chōson-sei ) the establishment of the village communities China ( 知名 村 , - mura ) and Wadomari. In 1946, during the Allied occupation , it was upgraded to a city (chō) .

traffic

China is located on Prefecture Road 84. The only airport is Okinoerabu Airport , it is located in the very northeast of the island. There is a ferry connection to the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima . It takes between 17 and 18 hours to get there.

economy

Agriculture is based primarily on the cultivation of sugar cane , potatoes and peanuts, and ornamental plants are also grown . A total of 1989  hectares of the community area are used for agriculture. However, since there are not enough job opportunities on the island, the residents migrate.

Culture

In China there is a special form of the lion dance , which is believed to have been adopted from Okinawa in the 18th century. Another traditional local dance is the Daija-Odori ( 大蛇 踊 り , dt. "Dance of the Big Snake"), which is performed with a snake doll that hangs in a frame and is controlled with threads. The dance is accompanied by taiko and shamisen .

Local dishes traditionally include tofu misozuke , made by drying tofu in the sun and adding miso to it. In 1982, China decided on the Ficus microcarpa as the symbol tree and the Chinese rose hawk as the symbol of the city.

education

Education in China is overseen by the five members of the city's education committee. These are elected for four years. In China there are five kindergartens, five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. This, the Okinoerabu High School, was created in 1949 through the merger of the two high schools in China and Wadomari; it has school buildings in both cities.

There is also a municipal library.

Public facilities

There are two medical outpatient departments, four dentists and a hospital, as well as two nursing homes. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces maintain a base that is about ten minutes by bus from central China.
