Koga Harue ( Japanese 古 賀 春江 ; born June 18, 1895 in Kurume ; † September 10, 1933 ) was a Japanese painter in the Yōga style.

Life

Koga was born in Kurume ( Fukuoka Prefecture ) as the eldest son of a priest who worked at Zenpuku-ji . In 1912 he went to Tokyo with the intention of becoming a painter. He studied at the private art schools Taiheiyō Gakai Kenkyūsho and Nihon Suisai Gakai Kenkyūsho . Also Ishii Hakutei was one of his teachers.

Then he decided to succeed his father as a priest, enrolled at Taishō University and studied there from 1916 to 1918, using the monk's name Ryōshō ( 良 昌 ). He continued to paint, however, and exhibited a picture for the first time in the Nika-kai artists' association in 1917 . There he won the Nika Prize in 1922. In the same year he founded the avant-garde artists' association Action ( ア ク シ ョ ン , Akushon ) with Nakagawa Kigen (1892–1972) and others . In 1930 he was accepted as a member of the Nika-kai. Despite his early death, Koga left an extensive work behind.

Koga was close to Kawabata Yasunari , was also known as an avant-garde poet.

style

Koga's early style was shaped by Cubism and Expressionism and the work of the artist André Lhote . After 1925 there was a period of fairy-tale pictures in the manner of Paul Klee , from 1929 his pictures took on surrealistic traits. In 1929 he showed the picture “The Sea” ( , Umi ) in the Nika exhibition , and in 1930 “Make-up outside the window” ( 窓 外 の 化粧 , Sōgai no Keshō ).

  1. The Nika-kai ( 二 科 会 ) was founded in 1914 by artists who were part of the “2. Department “of the art exhibition of the Ministry of Culture had not been accepted. This society still exists today.
