The Taishō University ( Japanese 大 正 大学 , Taishō daigaku ) is a private Buddhist university in Japan . The main campus is in Nishi-Sugamo, Toshima (Tokyo Prefecture).
history
The university was founded in the last year of the Taishō period (1926) through the merger of the three Buddhist universities. The three were:
- the Tendai-shū University ( 天台 宗 大学 , Tendai-shū daigaku , founded in 1885),
- the Buzan College ( 豊 山 大学 , Buzan daigaku , founded in 1887 and borne by Shingon-shū Buzan-ha ), and
- the religious college ( 宗教 大学 , Shūkyō daigaku , founded in 1887 and borne by Jōdo-shū ).
In 1943 the Chizan Technical School ( 智 山 専 門 学校 , Chizan semmon gakkō , founded in 1914 and supported by Shingon-shū Chizan-ha ) was merged to form Taishō University.
At first the university had only one faculty: humanities. In 1949 it was reorganized under the new Japanese education system and divided into two faculties: Buddhist Studies and Humanities. In 1968 the old main building (built in 1908 as the main building of the religious college) was removed; only the canopy remains in the Meiji Mura open-air museum . In 1993 the Faculty of Buddhist Studies was changed to the Faculty of Human Sciences. In 2010 two faculties were added: Buddhist Studies and Expression Studies.
