Ishii Hakutei ( Japanese 石井 柏 亭 ; real name Ishii Mankichi 石井 満 吉 ; * 1882 in Tokyo ; † 1958 ) was a Japanese painter and graphic artist.

Life

The son of the painter and lithographer Ishii Teiko was initially taught in the traditional painting style by his father. After his death he turned to Western art and studied with Asai Chū and from 1904 at the Tokyo Art School (Tōkyō bijutsu gakkō) with Kuroda Seiki and Fujishima Takeji .

Since 1904 he published the art and literary magazine Myōjō , in which he published Yamamoto Kanae's graphic Gyofu ( Eng . "The Fisherman"). The publication is considered to be the hour of birth of the graphic art movement Sōsaku hanga , in which - in contrast to traditional Japanese woodcut art - emphasis was placed on the artist doing all the work himself, from the design to the cutting of the printing block to the printing.

Ishii stayed in Europe from 1910 to 1912, where in Rome the picture “The Roman flower seller” ( ロ ー マ の 花 売 嫁 , Roma no hana-uri yome ) and in Paris “In the accommodation in Paris” ( 巴里 の 宿 にて , Pari no shuku nite ) was created. He brought back the picture “German Lady” ( 独 逸 の 婦人 , Doitsu no fujin ) from Berlin .

In 1905 he founded the magazine Heitan ( Eng . "Transformation") with Yamamoto Kanae and his brother Ishii Tsuruzō , and two years later also together with other artists the magazine Hōsun (Eng. Consciousness ). Both were unsuccessful financially and were discontinued after a few years. From 1910 to 1912 Ishii stayed in Europe, where he got to know Fauvism , Cubism and Futurism . After his return he published in Japan about this as well as about the painter Wassili Kandinsky and the painter group Blauer Reiter .

In 1912 he continued his work on the Bijin series Tōkyō jūnikei ( Eng . "Twelve Views of Tokyo"), which began in 1910 . This work anticipated the style of Shin hanga , a movement to renew the traditional ukiyo-e style. The series, however, sold poorly and only nine of the twelve drafts were printed. In 1915 he published several portraits of Kabuki actors in the magazine Shin Nigao (Eng. "New Portrait") . 1917-18 he participated with 15 designs in the 50 prints series Nihon fukei hanga (Eng. "Japanese landscape prints "), a joint production of several artists.

In the following years he increasingly turned to oil and watercolor painting. Here he was very successful. In 1921 he supported Nishimura Isaku , together with Yosano Akiko and Yosano Tekkan , in founding a technical college for arts and crafts. He exhibited several times at the Shin Bunten (Eng. "New Art Exhibition") and became a member of the Imperial Art Academy. His students included u. a. Hiratsuka Un'ichi and Koizumi Kishio . He also wrote the u. a. Work, a description of the painting of his time.

Ishii received the French Order of Merit in 1928 and, posthumously, the multi-colored Order of the Rising Sun in 1949 .
