Nishimura Isaku ( Japanese 西村 伊 作 ; born September 6, 1884 in Shingū ; died February 11, 1963 ) was a teacher, Japanese architect, painter, potter, poet and researcher on everyday culture during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Isaku (d. I. Isaac ), a son of the Christian Ōishi Yohei ( 大石 余 平 ; 1854-1891) was adopted by the Nishimura family at the age of three. In 1904 he was an opponent of the Russo-Japanese War and developed into a socialist and pacifist. In 1912 he founded a kindergarten. He turned to painting in 1913. In 1916 he created abstract pictures, and he also dealt with pottery.

In 1921 Nishimura founded the private school "Kultur-Akademie" ( 文化 学院 , Bunka gakuin ) in Tokyo with the help of Yosano Akiko , Yosano Tekkan , Ishii Hakutei and Kawasaki Natsu , and opened the Nishimura architects' office. The school was expanded in reinforced concrete in 1938 according to its own design. In 1943 Nishimura was suspected of lese majesty and arrested. The school was closed.

In 1945 Nishimura was released without trial and in 1946 the school was able to resume operations. From 1951 Nishimura dealt again with ceramics, in 1960 he published an autobiography with the title "Wealth came to me".

  1. Kawasaki Natsu ( 河 崎 な つ ; 1889–1966) was a teacher and women's rights activist.
  2. After an interruption from 1943 to 1946, the facility was re-established as a vocational school under the same name.
