Itoshima ( Japanese 糸 島 市 , - shi ) is a city in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan .
geography
Itoshima extends over the western half of the Itoshima peninsula ( 糸 島 半島 , Itoshima-hantō ), the south adjoining Itoshima plain ( 糸 島 平野 , Itoshima-heiya ) to the ridge of the Sefuri Mountains ( 脊 振 山地 , Sefuri-sanchi ), which also forms the border with Saga Prefecture . The highest point is the Raizan ( 雷 山 ) with 955.3 m.
history
In the southeast of the Itoshima plain, several sites from the Yayoi period were found, which are assigned to the pre-Japanese state of Ito , which was described for this period and whose name has been preserved in that of the city.
Itoshima was on 1 January 2010 from the merger of the city Maebaru ( shi ) and the last two municipalities Shima ( - machi and) Nijō ( -machi ) in Itoshima-gun founded which was dissolved then.
