from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Itoshima-gun ( Japanese 糸 島 郡 ) was a district ( gun ) in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan . The district is named after the peninsula and plain of the same name .

In 2003 it had an area of 111.61 km², a population density of 279.30 people per km² and a total of around 31,173 inhabitants.

The district was created on February 26, 1896 from the districts Ito-gun ( 怡 土 郡 ) and Shima-gun ( 志摩 郡 ) formed under the Ritsuryō Code . The name of the former probably goes back to the Weizhi Worenchuan ( Chinese 魏志 倭人 傳  /  魏志 倭人 传 , W.-G. Wei-chih Wo-jen-chuan , Japanese. 魏志 倭人 伝 , Gishi Wajinden , dt. "Records of Wei : Lives of the People of Wa") mentioned Yayoi-temporal state Ito back and the second probably simply means island.

On January 1, 2010, the last two municipalities ( machi ) Nijō and Shima merged with the independent city of Maebaru to form the new municipality Itoshima (Fukuoka) , whereby the district ceased to exist.
