The Shiretoko National Park ( Japanese 知 床 国立 公園 , Shiretoko Kokuritsu Kōen ) covers most of the Shiretoko Peninsula on the northeast tip of the island of Hokkaidō in Japan . This Japanese national park was established on June 1, 1964 and has an area of 711.0 km². As one of the most remote regions of Japan, much of the peninsula is only accessible on foot or by boat. The park is known for having the largest bear population in Japan and for the views of Kunashiri Island , which is occupied by Russia but is claimed by Japan. 2005 which declared UNESCO , the area including the adjacent marine protected area for World Heritage and recommended the cross-border development of the region along with the Russian Kuril Islands as a "World Heritage Peace Park".
