World heritage in Libya
World Heritage Sites in Libya |
The world heritage in Libya (as of 2017) includes five UNESCO world heritage sites , all of which are world cultural heritage sites. Libya ratified the World Heritage Convention in 1978, and the first three World Heritage sites were added to the World Heritage List in 1982. The last World Heritage site to date was registered in 1986, and all five sites are on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger .
In 2016 the World Heritage Committee decided at its 40th meeting to put all World Heritage sites in Libya on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger. This was justified with the damage caused by the civil war in Syria and the risk of further damage.
