World Heritage in Oman

For World Heritage in Oman has five World Heritage sites , all five cultural heritage sites are. Oman acceded to the World Heritage Convention in 1981. The first World Heritage Site was registered in 1987, the last to date in 2018. In 2007 one site was removed from the World Heritage List.

The following table lists the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Oman in chronological order according to the year of their inclusion in the World Heritage List (K - cultural heritage, N - natural heritage, K / N - mixed, (R) - on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger ).

Qalhat ancient city 2018 K 1537 Qalhat was a major trading center for trade between the Arabian Peninsula, India, and eastern Asia. It is also an outstanding example of a city in the Principality of Hormuz . Many ruins still bear witness to its former importance. The city lost its importance after the destruction in 1508 by Portuguese colonizers under Afonso de Albuquerque

1994-2007 N 654 The site included an Arabian oryx reintroduction area . UNESCO removed this area from the World Heritage List on June 28, 2007, as the government of Oman had decided to reduce the size of the protected area by 90 percent and the population of the Arabian oryx had declined sharply. It was the first deletion of a world heritage from the UNESCO list.

Currently (2018) seven sites are entered in the tentative list of Oman, the last entry was made in 2014. The following table lists the sites in chronological order according to the year of their inclusion in the tentative list.
