The Jebel Shams ( Arabic جبل شمس, DMG Ǧabal Šams 'Sun Mountain ') is - even before the Jabal Kawr - the highest mountain in Oman in the Jabal al-Achdar Mountains and is about 240 kilometers from Muscat . It reaches a height of about 3000 meters - the information is not uniform.
A narrow, unpaved road leads to the summit, although it is not open to the public as it leads through a restricted military area . There is a radar station right on the mountain top .
On a 2000 meter high plateau southwest of the summit there are small villages and tourist accommodations. A 1000 meter deep canyon , the Wadi Nakhar, cuts between the plateau and the mountain peak .
