The Fortress of Bahla is a fortress in the city of Bahla in Oman .
It is right on the road from Bahla to Nizwa . The fortress is surrounded by a 7 mile long city wall together with the town of Bahla. The exact date of construction is unknown, but it is estimated to be in the 17th century. The builders are not known either, but it is believed that the Nabhani built the fortress. In 1987 the fortress was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In connection with this, a restoration of the very fragile complex was started. However, since UNESCO saw the originality of the building in danger through this step, it was on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger from 1988 to 2004 . A restoration using traditional methods has prevented it from being withdrawn.
Today, Bahla Fortress is one of the most important cultural attractions in Oman. The fortress has been open to the public again since 2014.
