World heritage in Afghanistan

The world heritage in Afghanistan includes two UNESCO world heritage sites , both of which are world cultural heritage sites. Afghanistan ratified the World Heritage Convention in 1979, and the first World Heritage site was added to the World Heritage List in 2002. The last World Heritage Site to date was registered in 2003, and both sites are on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger .

The following table lists the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Afghanistan in chronological order according to the year of their inclusion in the World Heritage List (K - cultural heritage, N - natural heritage, K / N - mixed, (R) - on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger ).

208 Many cultural sites from both the Buddhist and Islamic ages. This includes the 53 m and 35 m high Buddha statues by Bamiyan , which were carved from red sandstone in the 6th century and destroyed by the Taliban in 2001 .

As of 2018, four sites are entered in the tentative list of Afghanistan, the last entry was made in 2009. The following table lists the sites in chronological order according to the year they were included in the tentative list.
