World Heritage Sites in Sweden (S = Struve-Bogen ), (without Hälsingehöfe)

The world heritage in Sweden (as of 2017) includes fifteen UNESCO World Heritage Sites , including thirteen World Heritage Sites, one World Heritage Site and one mixed cultural and natural heritage site. Two of these sites are cross-border or transnational . The first World Heritage Site was added to the World Heritage List in 1991, and the last World Heritage Site to date was entered in 2012.

Sweden and the World Heritage Convention

Sweden signed the World Heritage Convention in 1984 and ratified it on January 22nd of the following year . In 1985, the Imperial Antiquities Offices of the Nordic countries began compiling a list of suitable objects on their territories.

In Sweden, the Riksantikvarieämbetet (Reichsantiquaramt) has the main responsibility for the implementation of the principles of the World Heritage Convention. It is also responsible for looking after the cultural heritage sites. The national nature conservation authority ( Naturvårdsverket ) guarantees the preservation of the natural heritage sites. These authorities continue to organize and fund the reports, which are sent to UNESCO every six years.

On behalf of the government, these authorities oversee the nomination process for new World Heritage sites. For this purpose, a working group of specialists in the respective subject area is formed. In addition, the provincial administrations of the provinces concerned are responsible for nominations. Once the documents have been completed, they will be forwarded to the government, which will then make the final nomination decision. Then the files go to UNESCO.

In 1991 the first Swedish property was declared a World Heritage Site - Drottningholm Palace on the island of Lovön near Stockholm. Since then, the number of Swedish World Heritage Sites has grown to 15.
