Rapadalen

Rapadalen

Rapadalen is a valley in the Swedish national park Sarek . It extends over a length of approx. 35 kilometers from the center of the national park in a south-easterly direction to Lake Laitaure .

The valley is formed by the Rapaälv . Within the Rapadals, the Rapaälv forms two delta-like landscapes: The Rapaselet is a lake that has silted up over the past millennia. The Rapa Delta is the mouth of the Rapaälv in the Laitaure. Due to the large amount of sediment carried along by the Rapaälv, the Laitaure silts up and will resemble the Rapaselet in a few millennia.

Flora and fauna

The animals found in the Rapadal include the elk (Alces alces), the wolverine (Gulo gulo), the lynx (Lynx lynx) and the wolf (Canis lupus).

The plants in Rapadal include: birch (Betula) and willow (Salix). You can also find Norwegian cinquefoil (Potentilla norvegica), the four- leaved singleberry (Paris quadrifolia), the upright cowslip (Primula stricta) and the Lapland alpine rose (Rhododendron lapponicum).

Hiking trails

In the valley, as everywhere in the Sarek National Park, there are no accommodations and no fixed, marked hiking trails. On the north side of the valley, however, there are well-trodden paths due to the frequent traffic. The north side of the valley is more popular, as it is considered to be easier despite the many difficult river crossings. Due to the wide and deep Rapaälv, changing from the north to the south side of the valley is not possible. It takes about four days to hike through the Rapadalen from Aktse to Mikkastugan , a locked hut owned by the national park administration in the center of the Sarek National Park. More days are needed to get to the Mikkastugan or to hike away from it.
