World Heritage Sites in North Macedonia

A UNESCO World Heritage site , which is a mixed cultural and natural heritage site, is part of the world heritage in North Macedonia (as of 2018) . The World Heritage Sites were added to the World Heritage List in 1979 when North Macedonia was still one of the six republics of Yugoslavia as the Socialist Republic of Macedonia . After gaining independence in 1991, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia acceded to the World Heritage Convention in 1997. Since then, no further World Heritage Sites have been added to the World Heritage List.

The following table lists the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Macedonia in chronological order according to the year of their inclusion in the World Heritage List (K - cultural heritage, N - natural heritage, K / N - mixed, (R) - on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger ).

1979 (2019 expansion) K / N 99 Right on the shores of Lake Ohrid , the city of Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. At the same time it was a cultural center of great importance in its history, not only for this part of the Balkans, but also for all nations of the Slavic language.
In 2019, the site was expanded to include shares on the Albanian lake shore and is now a transnational World Heritage Site.

2009 K 5413 Kokino is a megalithic observatory . The observatory consists of seven markings, so-called thrones, carved in stone by the people who lived there around 3800 years ago . With their help, the extreme positions of the sun and moon over the course of the year could be observed and the time of the summer solstice determined.
